As a complete amateur I will get this started and those that really know what they are doing can put me right. I painted my Pilgrim FT 16 years ago on a budget with no professional training and it is still in fine order other than chips (mostly it has to be said from tools dropped on it in the garage) so I cannot have done too bad a job! I think the best tip I can offer is to understand the limitations of your experience, equipment, budget, etc and work within them. A small compressor with low pressure will work fine but you will have to accept putting on thinner layers of paint and more of them. Just take your time and you will be fine, lots of thin layers leaving plenty of time to dry in between - don’t rush it! Mine is great for individual panels, but just does not have the legs for a whole car so I took more time. If you have not used a paint gun before, play on a panel from the donor first. Get to feel the way paint behaves as it hits the panel and you will soon get to understand how close to hold the gun as you move across/up & down the panel to achieve an optimum result. The thing to remember the paint droplets are drying the moment they leave your gun and the further away you are from the panel the more pressure is required to get them to flatten as they hit the panel. Paint that is too thin will need less pressure but is likely to run. Paint that is too thick is less likely to run but is more likely to create an "orange peel" finish as with low pressure the droplets will just not flatten out. One last thing, I think I am good at getting paint on - with flat colours, but I know I am rubbish with metallic’s / pearls. I am so bad that when I had to blend in a Gun Metal finish on my son's old Nova (a kind soul had keyed it) the family took a day out to avoid the inevitable foul language and toy throwing. If you really want a metallic / pearl finish get a professional to do it and accept that any minor repairs will require professional help. Mind you, most of us that build kit cars need professional help! Good luck!
